So, what you’re saying is if nothing else the President is effectively lying. So the question that I have, is does “realpolitik” justify lying? If so, how do I explain to my kid that, “Lying is wrong little one, except when done by really powerful people?”

Maybe the plain straight truth can’t work, but as far as I can see, no President in my lifetime has actually tried it.
